About FMW files

The .FMW extension is shared by two distinct but critical file types: HP Printer Firmware updates and Safe Software FME workspaces.

1. HP Printer Firmware: The most common variation (~60%) acts as a binary container for updating the internal system of HP printers and Cisco hardware. These files are typically compressed (often GZIP) and are not designed to be opened manually. The biggest obstacle is that users attempt to 'open' them on a PC, but they are proprietary binaries meant solely for transmission to a device via the HP Web Jetadmin utility or a USB connection.

2. FME Workspace: The second type is a data transformation script created by FME Desktop. These files describe complex ETL (Extract, Transform, Load) workflows. While powerful, FMW files are locked into the FME ecosystem. Users often need to convert them because:
