About FMI files

The .FMI file is an FME Include File utilized by FME, a spatial data integration platform developed by Safe Software. These files store reusable configurations, custom transformer parameters, or script snippets that can be referenced and included across multiple FME workspaces (FMW files). This modular approach prevents developers from rewriting complex data mapping logic for enterprise ETL (Extract, Transform, Load) pipelines. To natively open and execute these files, users must use FME Form (formerly FME Desktop). The main disadvantage of the .FMI format is its rigid, proprietary nature. Without an active license for FME software, which is expensive and highly specialized, users cannot run or natively test the logic stored inside. Standard text editors may display the raw code or XML structure, but they cannot interpret the spatial data transformations. Standard online converters fail to process these files because they lack the proprietary FME rendering engine. If you need to share the logic with non-FME users, the most practical conversion targets are plain text formats like TXT, XML, or JSON. Converting to these formats strips away execution capabilities but preserves the raw mapping logic for code review. Because .FMI is an execution dependency rather than a standalone media file, converting it to standard document formats like PDF is usually pointless. This file format is difficult to open or convert because only the original Safe Software FME engine can properly read or export the integrated spatial data. If our analysis detects a supported underlying or embedded text format, viewing or conversion to developer-friendly formats may still be possible.

Convert.Guru analyzes your FMI file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.

Users also converted MOV, FMW, BMAP and FMP files.

The FMI Converter Story

The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our FMI converter.
