SFW files are proprietary raster images created by Seattle FilmWorks (later known as PhotoWorks), a company that offered mail-order film processing services in the 1990s and early 2000s. These files were typically delivered to customers on floppy disks or CD-ROMs alongside their physical prints, allowing for early digital photo viewing.
Because the format is obsolete and proprietary, SFW files are functionally inaccessible on modern operating systems; they cannot be opened by standard viewers like Microsoft Photos, Apple Preview, or web browsers. While the underlying data is often a modified JPEG stream, the proprietary header prevents standard software from rendering the image. Users recovering these files from old backups often face a "digital lock-out," unable to view cherished family memories. To regain access, the most practical solution is converting these legacy files to JPG for easy sharing and cloud storage, or PNG and TIFF for archiving without further compression artifacts. For audio professionals, an .SFW file might alternatively be a Workspace file from MAGIX Sound Forge, used to save window layouts rather than media content.
