The .SFW file format is a proprietary raster image format originally created by Seattle FilmWorks (later known as PhotoWorks). In the 1990s and early 2000s, customers would mail in physical film rolls, and the company would return the developed prints along with digital copies saved as .SFW files on floppy disks or CDs.
Modern computers cannot natively open .SFW files. Because Seattle FilmWorks went out of business and their format was highly proprietary, standard image viewers built into Windows, macOS, and mobile devices do not support it. While vintage utilities or specific viewers like XnView or IrfanView can sometimes open them with the right plugins, dealing with legacy software is frustrating and carries security risks.
