About FME files

The .fme extension is most frequently associated with APIS IQ-Software, a specialized engineering tool used for Failure Mode and Effects Analysis (FMEA). These files serve as complex databases storing risk management structures, including system elements, functions, failure nets, and Risk Priority Numbers (RPN). Because the format is highly proprietary and designed for regulatory compliance (VDA/AIAG standards), it is not human-readable and cannot be opened by standard office software or text editors. A common point of friction is receiving this file from a quality engineer and being unable to view the risk assessment data without a costly license. In rare cases (approx. 1%), a .fme file may be a legacy mapping definition file from Safe Software's FME platform, which - unlike the binary APIS file - is plain text and can be viewed in a code editor. For the dominant FMEA type, the only reliable conversion method is to access the original software to export data. Users typically convert these files to PDF for static reporting, XLSX (Excel) for data filtering and sorting, or HTML for intranet publishing.

Convert.Guru analyzes your FME file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.

Users also converted FMW, CHK, DWG, TTP, LCP, ASO and PYTHON files.

The FME Converter Story

The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our FME converter.
