The .WKS file format is a legacy spreadsheet container historically used by two entirely different, competing software suites: Microsoft Works and Lotus 1-2-3 by IBM. In the 1990s and early 2000s, these programs were widely used for home budgeting, simple data tracking, and small business accounting. A Microsoft Works .WKS file often uses the Microsoft OLE Compound File format, whereas a Lotus .WKS file uses an older, simpler binary structure.
The major disadvantage of the .WKS format today is obsolescence. Microsoft discontinued Works in 2007, and IBM officially ended support for Lotus 1-2-3 in 2013. Opening a .WKS file natively is practically impossible on modern operating systems without installing legacy software or relying on third-party tools like LibreOffice Calc. Furthermore, these files lack support for modern spreadsheet features like advanced macros, conditional formatting, or large data limits. Modern browsers and mobile devices cannot open them at all.
