About WKS files
A .WKS file is most commonly a legacy spreadsheet created by Microsoft Works, a discontinued productivity suite that was ubiquitous on home PCs during the 1990s and 2000s. Alternatively, the extension was used by Lotus 1-2-3 (releases 1 and 1A) and occasionally Corel Quattro Pro. These files are the digital equivalent of a floppy disk in a cloud storage world: they contain valuable historical data - formulas, charts, and financial records - but are effectively locked out of modern workflows. The biggest obstacle is that Microsoft Excel (versions 2013 and later) has deprecated the import filters required to open these files directly, often triggering "File format not supported" errors or displaying gibberish. Furthermore, because .WKS is a proprietary binary format, it cannot be read by standard text editors.
