About LAY files
A .lay file is primarily associated with ABACOM Sprint-Layout, a popular software tool used for designing printed circuit boards (PCBs). These files contain the complete board geometry, including tracks, pads, component positioning, and layer data required for electronics manufacturing. Users often have trouble when trying to share these designs with fabrication houses or colleagues who do not own the software, as the .lay format is proprietary and not natively supported by standard CAD tools or web browsers. Additionally, the extension is famously ambiguous; it is also used by Tecplot 360 for scientific plot layouts, MAME for arcade emulator screen overlays (often XML-based), and Nemetschek Allplan for architectural drawings.
To overcome compatibility barriers, converting .lay files is essential. For PCB manufacturing, the standard procedure is converting the source file to Gerber (RS-274X) and Excellon formats. For documentation, archiving, or client reviews without requiring the standalone viewer, converting to PDF or high-resolution PNG is recommended. If mechanical integration is needed, exporting to DXF allows the board outline to be imported into software like AutoCAD or SolidWorks. For MAME users, the file is often a simple text-based XML file that can be edited in any text editor, whereas Tecplot users may need to render their layouts to raster images for reports.
Convert.Guru analyzes your LAY file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.
Users also converted LAY6, RAR, ZIP, SPL7, PDF, SPL, LAYOUT, JPG, LYT, GBR, PDSPRJ, BRD and SIG files.
The LAY Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our LAY converter.
