The .stat extension is heavily fragmented and used by entirely different applications to store statistical data. Most commonly, it functions as a text-based weather statistics summary file for the EnergyPlus building energy simulation program. However, it is also frequently used as a spreadsheet data archive (compressed via ZIP) by SmarterStats, database statistics for Kopia, and even memory save states for retro video game emulators like FinalBurn Neo or VisualBoyAdvance.
The main disadvantage of .stat files is their complete lack of standardization. Because multiple programs generate them using different internal structures (plain text, compressed XML archives, or proprietary binary blobs), your operating system does not know which application to use to open them natively. Sharing a raw .stat file usually results in "unsupported format" errors for the recipient. Users dealing with EnergyPlus weather summaries or SmarterStats web analytics usually need to extract the raw numerical data for broader reporting, which requires specialized tools or manual workarounds.
For tabular data analysis, convert your text or Open XML .stat files to CSV for universal compatibility across databases, or to XLSX for use in Microsoft Excel. For weather modeling, you may need to pair it with EPW files.
