The .FBK file extension is heavily fragmented and serves completely different software ecosystems. Its most common use is as a Firebird Database Backup, generated by the Firebird RDBMS. It is also widely used as a Family Tree Maker Backup by Software MacKiev's Family Tree Maker, and as a Field Book File in surveying software like Trimble and AutoCAD Civil 3D. Less commonly, it acts as a backup for Microsoft Dynamics NAV databases or even disguised JPEG images used by flash-based book software.
The primary disadvantage of an .FBK file is its strict dependency on the original software. You cannot simply double-click an .FBK file to view its contents. For example, Firebird backups require the command-line utility to restore the data into an active FDB database. Family Tree Maker backups require purchasing specific desktop software to extract your family history and records, which can be frustrating if you want to share your genealogy tree online. Surveying .FBK files are proprietary text files containing raw field measurements, requiring expensive CAD software to process. For genealogy archiving, converting to a universal GEDCOM (GED) file ensures long-term accessibility across different platforms. If your file is a Firebird backup, you must restore it to an FDB file or extract the schema to SQL.
