About FBC files

An .FBC file is primarily a compressed backup archive generated by Family Tree Maker (FTM), the popular genealogy software currently developed by Software MacKiev. Unlike the standard working file (FTM), the .FBC format is designed for storage and transport, compressing your database, media links, and family history logs into a single package. The main issue for users is that .FBC files are proprietary and read-only outside of the specific FTM environment; you cannot simply double-click to view your family tree, nor can you upload this file directly to services like Ancestry.com or MyHeritage. Furthermore, older .FBC files from DOS-based versions of FTM (circa 1990s) often face severe compatibility hurdles with modern operating systems, effectively locking you out of decades of research. To make this data usable, the file must first be restored within the Family Tree Maker software and then exported to a universally compatible format. For data interchange between different genealogy platforms, converting the restored file to GED (GEDCOM) is the standard best practice. For archiving visual charts or sharing with relatives who lack genealogy software, converting to PDF is ideal.

Note: In industrial contexts, .FBC may also refer to a system backup for Fronius welding equipment. These are typically standard GZIP archives renamed to .FBC, containing system logs and calibration data.

Convert.Guru analyzes your FBC file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.

Users also converted FTW, FBK, FPC, PDF, FTMB and FTM files.

The FBC Converter Story

The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our FBC converter.
