MAINTAINER NOTE: The .EPW extension refers to two distinct file formats. The most common (approx. 66%) is the EnergyPlus Weather file, while the second (approx. 17%) is a PCB Component Library.
This standard weather format, developed by the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE), drives building energy simulations in software like EnergyPlus and OpenStudio. It stores hourly meteorological data - such as dry bulb temperature, dew point, and solar radiation - in a text-based ASCII structure.
The Problem: While human-readable, the raw data is dense and strictly formatted. Analyzing trends (e.g., solar potential or heating degree days) directly in a text editor is impractical, and the file format is not natively supported by standard spreadsheet tools. Users often need to extract specific columns without breaking the header structure required by simulation engines.

Less frequently, .EPW files serve as electronic component libraries for DesignSpark PCB. These contain schematic symbols and PCB footprints.
The Problem: These are proprietary binary or structured text files locked to specific CAD ecosystems. You cannot open them in weather simulation software, and they require specific import wizards to view contents.
The Solution: Import directly into DesignSpark PCB to utilize the electronic parts. Conversion is generally limited to exporting component data within the CAD interface.
