The .EPW file extension primarily represents an EnergyPlus Weather Data file, developed by the U.S. Department of Energy. These files store typical hourly climate data - such as dry bulb temperature, relative humidity, and solar radiation - used by building energy simulation software like EnergyPlus. A secondary, unrelated use for the .EPW format is as a component library file in DesignSpark PCB or EasyEDA, storing electronic schematics, footprints, and 3D part models.
Working with .EPW files presents specific challenges. The weather data variant is essentially a comma-separated text file, but it features a rigid, 8-line header and lacks built-in column labels for its 8,760 rows of hourly data. This makes it extremely difficult to read or visualize directly in standard tools without preprocessing. The PCB library variant is a proprietary binary format, heavily locking users into specific ECAD ecosystems and making part reuse across different circuit design software practically impossible without conversion.
To overcome these limitations, you need to convert the file based on your goal. For energy data analysis, convert the .EPW to CSV or XLSX to easily plot the climate variables in Microsoft Excel or Python. For PCB libraries, extracting the 3D models into STEP or standardizing schematics to DXF ensures cross-platform compatibility.
