About CLM files

The .CLM extension is a classic example of a "filename collision," where multiple unrelated industries use the same three letters for vastly different data types.

Most commonly, a .CLM file contains Climate Data used by simulation software like TRNSYS or EnergyPlus. These files store meteorological information - such as temperature, solar radiation, and humidity - required to model thermal energy systems. While critical for engineering, the format is often text-based but structured specifically for the simulation engine, making it difficult to analyze directly in standard tools like Microsoft Excel. Users frequently need to convert these into standard CSV or XLSX formats to visualize trends or validate input data without navigating the complex simulation UI.

In the healthcare sector, a .CLM file may represent an EDI 837 Health Care Claim. These are strictly formatted electronic data interchange files used to submit insurance claims. While they are technically text files, the raw ANSI ASC X12 syntax is virtually unreadable to humans, consisting of long strings of codes and delimiters. Medical billing professionals often require a conversion to PDF for archival and human verification, or to XML/JSON for ingesting data into modern EMR systems.

Less frequently, .CLM files act as call logs for MagicJack devices or map files for games using the Unity engine. Regardless of the source, simply double-clicking a .CLM file rarely works. The best approach is to inspect the file header to determine its origin, then convert it to a universal format like CSV (for data), PDF (for documents), or TXT (for raw text inspection).

Convert.Guru analyzes your CLM file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.

Users also converted EPW, DDY, STAT, ZIP, TXT, WEA and ESO files.

The CLM Converter Story

The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our CLM converter.
