About WEA files
A .WEA file is predominantly a Weather Data file used in building performance simulations. Historically associated with the discontinued Autodesk Ecotect Analysis, these files contain hourly climate data - such as temperature, humidity, wind speed, and solar radiation - required to simulate thermal performance and energy consumption.
While .WEA files are technically ASCII text, they are formatted specifically for older simulation engines like Ecotect or specific workflows within EnergyPlus. The primary constraint for users today is that Autodesk Ecotect is no longer supported, making these files legacy artifacts that modern tools (like Revit or OpenStudio) may not import directly. Furthermore, attempting to analyze this raw data in a standard text editor is cumbersome due to rigid column formatting.
For modern workflows, the best practice is to convert .WEA files to EPW (EnergyPlus Weather) for compatibility with current simulation software, or to CSV (Comma Separated Values) to analyze the climate data in Microsoft Excel. In rare cases (approx. 10%), a .WEA file may be a reinforcement schedule from Allplan, in which case it should be converted to PDF or DXF for documentation.
Convert.Guru analyzes your WEA file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.
Users also converted EPW, DDY, ESO and CLM files.
The WEA Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our WEA converter.
