About PBP files

The .PBP file format is primarily used as a PlayStation Portable Executable Package. These files serve as the standard format for games, firmware updates, and homebrew applications on the Sony PSP console. The most common iteration is EBOOT.PBP, which acts as the main launch executable. You can run these files using the original PSP hardware or popular emulators like PPSSPP. A smaller percentage of .PBP files are PKPM project backup files used in structural design, which rely on standard 7-Zip compression under the hood, or CNC part programs for steel fabrication.

Working with .PBP files presents significant challenges. The PSP executable format is a proprietary, closed container. It bundles an encrypted executable (DATA.PSP), system metadata (PARAM.SFO), and multimedia assets (like ICON0.PNG) into a single unreadable package. This makes it impossible to view or edit the contents using standard desktop software. Users often need to convert these files to standard disc images like ISO or compressed CSO for better emulator compatibility, or they need to extract the internal assets to view game artwork.

Because this is a closed, proprietary format, standard online converters fail to process it. Often, only the original hardware, specialized emulators, or dedicated decryption tools can properly read or export the data. Our system can still identify the file format, inspect the file, and show text or internal content. If our analysis detects a supported underlying or embedded format - such as the 7Z compression in PKPM backups - viewing or conversion may still be possible.

Convert.Guru analyzes your PBP file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.

Users also converted BIN, ISO, 7Z, CUE, ZIP, CHD, RAR, CSO, IMG, PSX, ECM, TORRENT and 1 files.

The PBP Converter Story

The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our PBP converter.
