About PBP files

The .PBP extension primarily identifies the PlayStation Portable Executable Package, most commonly found as EBOOT.PBP. These files act as containers for Sony PSP games, firmware updates, and homebrew applications, housing not just the executable code (DATA.PSP) but also metadata like icons (PNG), background music (AT3), and animations (PMF). While efficient for the PSP hardware, this format is a significant hurdle for PC users and archivists. You cannot simply double-click a .pbp file to play a game on Windows or macOS; it requires specialized emulators like PPSSPP or extraction utilities to access the contents. Users frequently need to convert these files to ISO disk images to use them with different emulators or to extract the embedded media assets.

Beyond gaming, the extension is used by PKPM structural design software for project backups (often just renamed 7-Zip archives) and by microEngineering Labs for PICBASIC PRO source code. If you are dealing with a PKPM file, the proprietary lock-in can be bypassed by checking if the file is a compressed archive. For PICBASIC, the file is plain text source code that often needs compiling to HEX for microcontrollers or converting to TXT for documentation.

Convert.Guru analyzes your PBP file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.

Users also converted BIN, ISO, 7Z, CUE, ZIP, CHD, RAR, CSO, IMG, PSX, ECM, TORRENT and 1 files.
