About DTX files
The .dtx file extension serves multiple completely different functions depending on where you find it. Primarily, it is a Game Engine Texture File utilized by the LithTech game engine, titles like CrossFire, and occasionally the Unreal Engine. In industrial settings, it operates as a PLC Data Variable Export for Schneider Electric Control Expert (formerly Unity Pro). Additionally, it is used as a Documented Source file by LaTeX, or as a weaving pattern in Fiberworks software.
Because .dtx is so fragmented, users face constant frustration simply trying to identify the file contents. Windows and macOS cannot open .dtx natively. Game textures often employ proprietary compressions that standard image viewers reject. Meanwhile, industrial PLC exports require expensive enterprise software licenses to parse the variables. LaTeX .dtx files remain unreadable text dumps unless compiled correctly.
Conversion is the only practical workaround. For web use and easy viewing, convert game texture .dtx files into standard PNG, JPG, or TGA images. If archiving or sharing LaTeX documentation, compile the .dtx to PDF. For PLC or Stäubli robotics data, converting to XML or CSV allows you to open and audit the variables in spreadsheet software. The DTX Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our DTX converter.
