About REZ files
The .rez file format is primarily used as a game resource archive by the LithTech game engine, developed by Monolith Productions. These large files package hundreds of game assets - such as 3D models, textures, sound effects, and level data - into a single container to optimize engine load times. Secondary uses include airfoil polar data files for the XFOIL aerodynamics software and resource archives for the BurgerLib development library. The main disadvantage of the .rez format is its heavily proprietary and closed nature. You cannot simply open these files with standard archive software. Each game release often uses a slightly modified version of the compression or encryption algorithm, making it highly frustrating for modders, dataminers, or players trying to access internal audio tracks and graphics. Users typically want to extract or convert .rez files into accessible formats. The best targets are standard archive formats like ZIP or 7Z. Once unpacked, the internal assets can be converted to standard media formats like PNG for textures, WAV for audio, or OBJ for 3D models. Because this is a closed, undocumented game asset format, standard online converters completely fail to process it. Often, only specialized extraction scripts can properly read the data.
