About REZ files
The .REZ file extension is primarily associated with the LithTech Game Engine, developed by Monolith Productions. It functions as a proprietary resource archive, acting as a container similar to a ZIP or RAR file, but structured specifically for game performance. These archives bundle thousands of game assets - including DTX textures, WAV audio, maps, and character models - into a single file to reduce disk fragmentation and loading times. You will encounter these files when modding classic titles like Alien vs. Predator 2, No One Lives Forever, or TRON 2.0.
While efficient for the game engine, .REZ files are a "black box" for standard users. They cannot be opened with typical archivers like 7-Zip or WinRAR without specific plugins, making the assets inside inaccessible for viewing or editing. To access the content, you must first "unpack" or convert the archive into a standard folder structure using tools like Dragon UnPACKer or RezMgr. Once extracted, the internal files often require further conversion (e.g., converting proprietary DTX images to PNG for editing, or raw audio to MP3). For scientific users, a .REZ file may alternatively be a calculated airfoil polar data file generated by XFOIL, used in aerodynamic analysis, which requires distinct plotting software to visualize.
Convert.Guru analyzes your REZ file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.
Users also converted R, DTX, DOCX, RAR, PNG, ZIP, 20, TLV and 11 files.
The REZ Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our REZ converter.
