About DXT files
The .DXT file extension is predominantly used for DirectDraw Surface textures, originally developed for Microsoft DirectX applications. These files store 2D graphics optimized for 3D rendering environments. You will typically encounter them in PC game modding, specifically for games like Lineage II, or within engines like CryEngine. The main disadvantage of the .DXT format is its rigid nature. It is a highly specialized, GPU-optimized file that cannot be opened in standard web browsers, basic image viewers, or mobile devices. Because it utilizes lossy block compression, extracting the image to a standard format requires dedicated unpacking tools. Furthermore, many game developers apply custom, closed-source headers to their .DXT files, making them exceptionally difficult to read outside of the original game engine. Standard online converters usually fail to process them because they lack the specific decoders for every proprietary game header. To make these textures usable, you need to convert them. The best target formats are PNG for lossless editing or JPG for web sharing. If you are modding a different game, converting to the standard DDS format is recommended. This file format is notoriously difficult to open or convert because often only the original software can properly read or export the data. If our analysis detects a supported underlying or embedded format, viewing or conversion may still be possible. We can even handle the rare ORC yacht measurement data variation of this file, which is simply stored as plain XML.
Convert.Guru analyzes your DXT file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.
If you want to convert DXT file to TXT, RTF, DOC, DOCX, ODT, PAGES, TEX, LATEX, MD, MARKDOWN, LOG or NFO, you can use DirectX Texture Tool or similar software from the "Hardware-Optimized Texture Storage" category. In the File menu, look for Save As… or Export….
To convert PDF, DOC, ASC, TODO, NFO, MEMO, README, DOCX, JPG, TXT, NOTE or RTF files to DXT, try DirectX Texture Tool or another comparable tool in the "Hardware-Optimized Texture Storage" category.
The DXT Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our DXT converter.
