About DSZ files
The .dsz extension is shared by two distinct but widely used formats, creating frequent confusion for users.
1. DeSmuME Save State (Primary Use): Most commonly, a .dsz file is a compressed save state created by DeSmuME, a popular Nintendo DS emulator. Under the hood, this is simply a standard GZIP archive containing a dst (DeSmuME State) file. The real problem here is that other emulators or save editors cannot read the compressed .dsz directly. Users often need to "convert" these by renaming the extension to gz and extracting the contents to get a raw, editable state file.
2. Tajima Embroidery Design: In the textile industry, .dsz represents a stitch data file for Tajima embroidery machines. Unlike the emulator format, this is a vector-based instruction set for needle positioning. These files are proprietary and difficult to view without expensive digitizing software like Wilcom EmbroideryStudio or Pulse. For practical use with home machines (like Brother or Janome) or for client previews, users typically convert these .dsz files to more universal formats like DST, PES, or standard PDF production sheets.
3. Trimble SiteVision: Less frequently, .dsz files are zipped archives used by Trimble SiteVision for visualizing geospatial data. These are essentially ZIP files rename to .dsz.
Convert.Guru analyzes your DSZ file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.
If you want to convert DSZ file to SAV, DSV, CSV, JSON, XML, YAML, YML, TOML, INI, CFG, CONF or DAT, you can use DeSmuME or similar software from the "Nintendo DS Emulator Save" category. In the File menu, look for Save As… or Export….
To convert DBF, XML, SQLITE, XLSX, SQL, TSV, ACCDB, YAML, MDB, CSV, ODS or JSON files to DSZ, try DeSmuME or another comparable tool in the "Nintendo DS Emulator Save" category.
The DSZ Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our DSZ converter.
