About BSV files

The .BSV extension is a classic example of a filename collision, serving three distinct and incompatible purposes. Most commonly, it represents a Bluespec SystemVerilog file, a high-level hardware description language used by engineers to design complex chips (ASICs/FPGAs). These files are essentially plain text but require specialized compilers from Bluespec to function. A major problem here is that standard IDEs often lack syntax highlighting for this niche format, prompting users to convert them to standard TXT or compile them into V (Verilog) for broader compatibility.

Alternatively, in the gaming and emulation community, a .BSV file is a "movie" recording used by emulators like BizHawk or bsnes. Crucially, this is not a video file. It contains a log of controller inputs (button presses) executed frame-by-frame. Users frequently try to open these in players like VLC Media Player only to fail because the file contains no image data. To watch these, you must load the original game ROM into the specific emulator version used to record it and "play" the file, or use the emulator's internal tools to render and export it as an AVI or MP4.

Finally, .BSV is occasionally used as a lightweight data format standing for Bar Separated Values (using | as a delimiter instead of commas). While efficient, Microsoft Excel does not automatically recognize the pipe delimiter, forcing users to import the data manually. Converting these files to standard CSV or XLSX makes the data immediately accessible for analysis.

Convert.Guru analyzes your BSV file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.

Users also converted CSV, JPG, DOCX, BWW, NDS, DSZ and BTC files.

The BSV Converter Story

The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our BSV converter.
