The .APP extension primarily identifies a macOS Application Bundle, which is technically a directory structure that the macOS operating system presents as a single executable program. Because these files are actually folders containing resources, code, and property lists, transferring them via email or non-Apple file systems often results in data corruption or the file appearing as a standard folder. Users on Windows or Linux cannot directly execute these files, leading to compatibility friction. Additionally, Microsoft SharePoint uses the .APP extension for SharePoint Add-ins, which are essentially ZIP archives containing web parts and XML manifests.
