About DGM files

The .DGM extension is a classic 'container of confusion' because it is shared by over a dozen completely unrelated software packages. Most frequently (approx. 34%), it represents a model diagram generated by Mplus, a statistical modeling program used to visualize latent variables and path analysis. However, your file might also be a Digital Terrain Model from civil engineering tools like 12d Model or DATAflor, a power monitoring diagram from Schneider Electric PME, or even a mind map export from MindMeister.

The primary issue with .DGM files is their proprietary fragmentation; an Mplus file is binary-incompatible with a 12d Model file, and neither can be opened by standard image viewers. This is a common issue when trying to share statistical findings or engineering surveys with clients who do not license this niche, expensive software. Often, these files are strictly internal representations of data, meaning they lack the portability of standard formats.

For general sharing and archiving, the best approach is converting these diagrams to PDF or PNG images. This 'freezes' the visual data, ensuring it looks identical on any device without requiring the original host application. For engineering and CAD contexts (like 12d Model or AutoCAD), converting to DXF or DWG is essential to migrate the vector geometry into other design suites like Blender or SketchUp. If dealing with MindMeister JSON-based DGM files, converting to Markdown or Plain Text can help extract the text hierarchy.

Convert.Guru analyzes your DGM file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.

Users also converted DMG, DNG, DWG, BPMN, DRAWIO and DFD files.

FAQ

If you want to convert DGM file to SVG, AI, EPS, PDF, JPG, CDR, WMF, EMF, SWF, FLA, XFL or SKETCH, you can use Mplus or similar software from the "Statistical Model Diagram" category. In the File menu, look for Save As… or Export….

To convert AFPUB, EPS, FIG, VSD, SKETCH, VDX, AFPHOTO, PDF, AFDESIGN, SVG, VSDX or AI files to DGM, try Mplus or another comparable tool in the "Statistical Model Diagram" category.

The DGM Converter Story

The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our DGM converter.
