About DIP files
The .DIP file extension is most commonly associated with DipTrace PCB Layout files, a proprietary format used by DipTrace for designing printed circuit boards. These files contain the complete board architecture, including component placement, trace routing, and copper pours.
The Problem: Proprietary Lock-in
Because .DIP files are specific to DipTrace software, they pose significant challenges for collaboration and manufacturing. You cannot send a raw .DIP file to most PCB fabrication houses, as they require industry-standard machine formats. Additionally, clients or mechanical engineers without a DipTrace license cannot view or edit these files, creating a workflow bottleneck.
The Solution: Conversion Targets
To bridge this gap, .DIP files must be converted based on the end goal:
- For Manufacturing: Convert to Gerber RS-274X and N.C. Drill files. This is the standard language for PCB plotters.
- For Mechanical CAD: Convert to DXF or STEP (3D) to integrate the PCB design into housing enclosures in software like AutoCAD or SolidWorks.
- For Documentation: Export to PDF or PNG for easy viewing by stakeholders who do not have EDA software installed.
Secondary Format: Design It! 3D
A significant portion of .DIP files are interior design projects from legacy software like Design It! 3D. These are project files, not images. To share your room designs, you must render or convert these internal project states into standard JPEG or TIFF images.
Convert.Guru analyzes your DIP file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.
Users also converted DIB, DCH, DIPS6, SGD_, DIPS, CDW, LAY, PDF, 3, ZIP, LAY6, FBX and JPG files.
The DIP Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our DIP converter.
