The .DTF extension is a notorious source of confusion because it represents a collision of several unrelated file formats. Historically, it is most often a Symantec TouchBase database file, holding legacy contact information that is now difficult to access. In modern workflows, a .DTF file is likely a QuoteWerks Document Transport File used to bundle sales quotes, an IBM i (AS/400) Data Transfer file containing transfer definitions, or a HOBO data logger file from Onset.
The primary problem users face is the "black box" nature of these files; a QuoteWerks file is binary and unreadable in text editors, while an IBM transfer file might just contain configuration text. Users typically encounter these files when trying to migrate legacy databases, share sales quotes with clients who don't have the software, or analyze scientific data. Attempting to open them in the wrong application results in errors or garbled text.
To make this data useful, the target format depends on the source. For QuoteWerks files, converting to PDF is the standard for sharing professional quotes. For IBM transfer definitions or HOBO logger data, converting to CSV or Excel (.XLSX) allows for immediate analysis in spreadsheet software. For legacy TouchBase archives, extracting data to vCard or CSV is necessary to import contacts into Microsoft Outlook.
