The .DTF file extension is notoriously fragmented, serving as a proprietary container for dozens of entirely unrelated software systems. Most frequently, it operates as a QuoteWerks Document Transport File, an Onset HOBO weather data logger file, an IBM AS/400 data transfer file, or a legacy Symantec Touchbase database. Because the extension is recycled by different developers, opening a .DTF file without the original application is a frustrating guessing game.
The biggest disadvantage of the .DTF format is its lack of cross-platform standardization. Many are proprietary binary blobs that lock your data into specialized, expensive software ecosystems. For example, Danish Tinglysning System files are actually standard PDFs, Lotus Notes temporary files are PNGs, and 1C data exchange files are just renamed ZIP archives.
