.SEV files are 3D model viewer files created by Solid Edge, a professional CAD software suite developed by Siemens. These files store lightweight, XML-based representations of 3D models and assemblies. They are built strictly for sharing designs with clients, managers, or external partners who need to view, rotate, and measure 3D models without purchasing or installing the full CAD program.
The primary disadvantage of the .SEV format is its proprietary, closed nature. It is heavily restricted to the Siemens software ecosystem. It requires the free Solid Edge Viewer or the mobile equivalent to open. Because it is optimized for fast viewing rather than engineering, the file strips away critical parametric history and full boundary representation (B-rep) geometry found in the native PAR (part) or ASM (assembly) files. Furthermore, .SEV files are not supported by web browsers or generic 3D modeling tools like Blender or AutoCAD.
Professionals frequently need to convert .SEV files into universal 3D formats such as STEP, STL, or OBJ to import them into manufacturing software or alternative 3D programs. Converting to a 3D PDF is also common for easier document sharing.
