About E01 files

An EnCase Evidence File (.E01) is a specialized disk image format used in digital forensics to preserve the exact state of a hard drive or storage device. Originally developed by Guidance Software (now OpenText), it relies on the Expert Witness Compression Format (EWF) to store a bit-stream copy of acquired media, including unallocated space and deleted files.

A common issue with .E01 files is their proprietary structure and massive size. Because they capture entire physical disks, files frequently exceed hundreds of gigabytes and are often split into segmented sequences (E01, E02, E03) to bypass legacy file system limits. Opening these files requires expensive, specialized software like OpenText EnCase or high-learning-curve tools like Autopsy. Standard file archivers and operating systems cannot mount or read them, leaving users locked out of the data unless they possess specific forensic tooling.

To make the data accessible for general analysis or recovery, the best approach is converting the .E01 container into a raw binary format like DD or 001. This removes the proprietary compression and metadata wrappers, allowing the disk image to be mounted by standard Linux tools or virtually mounted on Windows. For users simply looking to retrieve specific documents or photos trapped inside the forensic image, extracting the internal files and converting them to standard formats like PDF, DOCX, or JPG is the most practical solution.

Convert.Guru analyzes your E01 file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.

Users also converted E1, EWF, IMAGE15, EVF, TXT, JPG, ZIP, RAW, PNG, AD1, DD, VDI and SER files.

The E01 Converter Story

The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our E01 converter.
