About E01 files

The .E01 file extension represents an EnCase Evidence File, a specialized forensic disk image format developed by Guidance Software (now OpenText). Forensic investigators and cybersecurity professionals use these files to store a bit-by-bit physical copy of a hard drive or mobile device. This format wraps the raw disk data with metadata, case information, and cryptographic hashes to ensure the chain of custody remains legally sound in court.

You can mount, browse, or analyze .E01 files using commercial forensic suites like OpenText EnCase Forensic and AccessData FTK. Fortunately, you can also read them with robust open-source tools such as Autopsy or Sleuth Kit.

Users frequently encounter severe limitations when handling .E01 files outside of forensic labs. The format is heavily proprietary, deliberately obfuscated, and uses chunk-based compression. Furthermore, these files are massive, frequently spanning hundreds of gigabytes, which exceeds the memory and storage limits of standard desktop applications. You cannot simply mount an .E01 file natively in Windows or macOS, nor can you extract its contents using typical archive tools like ZIP or RAR extractors.

To interact with the data freely, you often must convert the .E01 container into an uncompressed raw disk image, such as DD, RAW, or ISO. While this makes the data universally mountable by most operating systems, be aware that you will permanently lose the forensic metadata, the cryptographic verification, and the compression benefits, resulting in a much larger target file.

Because this file format is heavily structured, closed, and extremely large, standard online converters fail to process it. Extracting the raw data requires software that understands the proprietary EnCase chunking algorithms. We can inspect the file safely, extract embedded text, and if our analysis detects a supported underlying structure, viewing or conversion may still be possible.

Convert.Guru analyzes your E01 file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.

Users also converted E1, EWF, IMAGE15, EVF, TXT, JPG, ZIP, RAW, PNG, AD1, DD, VDI and SER files.

The E01 Converter Story

The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our E01 converter.
