About VAM files

The .VAM extension serves two distinct, incompatible purposes, creating significant confusion for users trying to open them. The most common iteration (approx. 29%) is a Character Asset Package used by Virt-A-Mate, a highly customizable adult sandbox simulation game. These files are typically JSON-formatted text files that define character morphs, skin textures, and scene logic. They are strictly data containers meant to be read by the game engine; they cannot be "played" like a media file, and opening them in a standard editor just shows raw code. Users often need to inspect the code to debug assets or extract embedded resource references.

Alternatively, a .VAM file may be a Video Alarm Management recording (approx. 27%), often sourced from railroad or industrial surveillance systems. While these files contain audio-visual data, they frequently use proprietary codecs or non-standard headers that prevent playback in Windows Media Player or QuickTime. This proprietary lock-in makes sharing evidence or archiving footage difficult. For these video files, the best workflow is converting them to standard MP4 or MKV formats for universal compatibility. In many cases, these are simply AVI containers with a renamed extension, meaning robust tools like VLC media player can often play or transcoding them directly.

Convert.Guru analyzes your VAM file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.

Users also converted VAR, VAB, VMB, ASSETBUNDLE, FBX, OBJ, BLEND, ZIP, JPG, PDF and DAZ files.
