About VAM files
The .VAM extension serves two completely different purposes depending on the source. Most commonly, it acts as a character asset package for the VR simulation game Virt-A-Mate. These files are internally structured as JSON data, storing coordinates, morphs, and references to textures. Alternatively, a .VAM file is a railroad event video recording or an export from a Video Alarm Management System. These video files act as proprietary wrappers, often obscuring an underlying AVI movie stream. Both variants present distinct disadvantages. Virt-A-Mate files are useless outside of the game engine, while VAM video files often refuse to open in default operating system media players due to modified headers or specialized codecs. Users typically need to convert game-based .VAM files to standard JSON or TXT to edit properties in bulk without launching the heavy VR environment. For the video variant, converting to MP4 or MKV is essential for playback on standard devices or sharing with stakeholders. However, this format is highly closed and proprietary. Many standard online converters fail because they rely on file extensions rather than inspecting file headers. Just drag and drop your file to identify the format, view it, and convert it when possible using convert.guru. If our analysis detects the underlying text-based JSON or an embedded AVI video stream, viewing or conversion may still be possible.
Convert.Guru analyzes your VAM file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.
If you want to convert VAM file to DAZ, OBJ, FBX, DAE, 3DS, MAX, BLEND, MA, MB, C4D, STL or PLY, you can use Virt-A-Mate or similar software from the "VR Asset / Video Recording" category. In the File menu, look for Save As… or Export….

The VAM Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our VAM converter.
