The .cwp file format most commonly stores project data for Cakewalk by BandLab (formerly SONAR), a popular Digital Audio Workstation (DAW). The extension is also utilized by Cyotek WebCopy as a GZIP-compressed website crawl project, and by CaseWare Working Papers as a ZIP-packaged audit bundle. Older systems may associate it with legacy Corel WordPerfect documents.
Sharing a .cwp Cakewalk file is difficult because the recipient must own the exact same DAW and plugins to open it correctly. The format is heavily proprietary and cannot be opened by media players or web browsers. Crucially, audio .cwp files do not contain the actual audio data (like vocals or recorded instruments); they act as a blueprint referencing external WAV or AIF audio files stored in a local companion folder. If you move the .cwp file without its accompanying audio folder, the project will fail to load, resulting in frustrating offline media errors.
To share your work, conversion is mandatory. For web distribution or standard listening, export the project to MP3 or FLAC. For editing stems in another DAW like Ableton or Logic Pro, convert the tracks to WAV and export the MIDI to MID.
