About WRK files
A .WRK file is primarily associated with legacy versions of Cakewalk (now Cakewalk by BandLab), serving as a project file for MIDI sequencing. Unlike modern MP3 or WAV files, a WRK file does not contain actual audio recordings; instead, it stores the "instructions" for the music - MIDI note data, tempo maps, track settings, and pointers to external audio files. This creates a significant problem for users attempting to archive or share old projects: without the original external audio assets or the specific synthesizer configuration, the file may play back silently or sound completely different.
Because the format is proprietary and largely obsolete (replaced by CWP and CWB), most modern media players and even some DAWs cannot open it directly. For archival purposes, the best workflow is to convert the internal data to standard MID (MIDI) for notation and sequencing compatibility, or to render the project out to WAV or MP3 if you need a playable audio file.
Note: A minority of .WRK files may be simulation cases generated by AspenTech software (like Aspen Plus) or generic "workspace" files used by SQL Server. If your file isn't music-related, it is likely a specialized configuration file that requires its original engineering environment to be useful.

The WRK Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our WRK converter.
