About CON files

The .CON file extension is notoriously fragmented, serving as a catch-all container for "configuration" or "construction" files across dozens of entirely unrelated software ecosystems. Its most common uses include plain-text game engine configuration scripts (for titles like Battlefield 2, Microsoft Train Simulator, and Transport Fever), proprietary dental CAD construction files for Sirona Dental Systems, and post-processor configurations for CNC software like Autodesk PowerMILL. Because the extension is shared across so many industries, operating systems routinely fail to open it automatically.

The main disadvantage of the .CON format is its lack of standardization. A .CON file could be a simple UTF-16 text document, an XML Windows Contact file, or a heavily encrypted binary blob containing 3D dental scan data. Without inspecting the file headers, it is impossible to know its true origin. If it is a proprietary binary CAD file, you are typically locked into expensive ecosystem software just to view it. If it is a game script, opening it in a standard word processor can corrupt the formatting and break the software.

To overcome these software barriers, converting the file is often necessary. For script editing or archiving game configurations, convert to TXT or XML. If you need to share text-based CNC post-processor limits or contact data, convert to PDF. For 3D CAD variants, exporting to an open format like STL is required for interoperability. Drag and drop your file here to analyze its true origin and convert it securely right in your browser - free, online, and without installing software.

Convert.Guru analyzes your CON file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.

Users also converted ENT, BAK, CONF, TXT, PLAN, SKS, ZONE, BBC and STL files.

The CON Converter Story

The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our CON converter.
