The .CON file extension is notoriously fragmented, serving as a catch-all container for "configuration" or "construction" files across dozens of entirely unrelated software ecosystems. Its most common uses include plain-text game engine configuration scripts (for titles like Battlefield 2, Microsoft Train Simulator, and Transport Fever), proprietary dental CAD construction files for Sirona Dental Systems, and post-processor configurations for CNC software like Autodesk PowerMILL. The main disadvantage of the .CON format is its lack of standardization.
