About CONF files
A .CONF file primarily acts as a configuration file to store runtime settings for software applications, VPNs, and server environments. They are widely used by tools like Microsoft Skype and Microsoft Teams, WireGuard for VPN tunnels, Apache HTTP Server, and Linux operating systems. Depending on the software, the internal structure may be raw plain text, JSON, or XML. The biggest challenge with .CONF files is their lack of standardization. Because they do not adhere to a single strict schema, opening them in basic text editors can result in formatting errors, broken line breaks, or unreadable encoding. A single syntax error, like a missing bracket or wrong indentation, can crash the dependent application. They are also not inherently secure unless encrypted, making sharing them risky if they contain API keys or network secrets. For easier editing and syntax highlighting, convert to JSON or XML. If you need to share the file content securely or print it for documentation, convert it to PDF or standard TXT. Drop your file here to view and convert it securely right in your browser.
Convert.Guru analyzes your CONF file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.
If you want to convert CONF file to MP4, OVPN, MP3, JSON, YAML, PDF, INI, CFG, CONFIG, XML, YML or TOML, you can use Notepad++ or similar software from the "Configuration Settings Storage" category. In the File menu, look for Save As… or Export….
To convert ZSHRC, RCFILE, GITCONFIG, RC, PLIST, BASHRC, CONFIG, PROFILE, INI, PREFS, CFG or PROPERTIES files to CONF, try Notepad++ or another comparable tool in the "Configuration Settings Storage" category.
The CONF Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our CONF converter.
