About ENT files

The .ENT extension is a "chameleon" format used across vastly different industries, leading to significant user confusion. Most commonly, it represents a CORENET e-Submission file, a digitally signed container used by Singapore's Building and Construction Authority for architectural compliance. These files are proprietary and encrypted, meaning standard tools cannot open them, and they often require specific government viewers like the ESPro software.

However, in the scientific community, .ENT refers to a Protein Data Bank file (identical to PDB), storing 3D molecular structures. Users frequently need to convert these from .ENT to PDB, CIF, or render them as PNG images, as standard photo viewers cannot interpret the ASCII coordinate data.

Finally, in the tech and gaming sectors, .ENT files serve as XML External Entities or game entity definitions for engines like Valve Source and CD Projekt RED REDengine. These are often plain text files describing level logic or reusable code snippets. A common drawback is that operating systems do not associate these text-based variations with text editors by default.

The ENT Converter Story

The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our ENT converter.
