The .ent file extension is a heavily fragmented format. Most commonly, it is a CORENET e-Submission digitally signed file used by the Singaporean government, or a Macromolecular structure data file distributed by the Worldwide Protein Data Bank (wwPDB). It is also widely used as an External Entity file in XML/SGML standards, or as an entity definition for game engines like the Source Engine and REDengine.
Because it has so many conflicting uses, handling an .ent file is frustrating. A user receiving an .ent file rarely knows what application created it. If it is an encrypted Entrust file or a signed CORENET submission, the file is heavily locked down and requires specific proprietary software to open. Game entity files are strictly bound to their specific game engine, making them useless outside of their native modding environments.
To make the data usable, you must convert it based on its true internal format. For 3D protein structures, convert to standard PDB or CIF to ensure broader compatibility in modern molecular viewers. For XML snippets or plain-text game entities, convert to TXT or JSON to view the code cleanly. For CORENET submissions, convert to PDF for easy document archiving and sharing, though note that you will lose the digital signature validation in the process.
