About ZONE files
A .zone file is primarily a plain-text configuration file used to define a Domain Name System (DNS) zone. Following the strict standards of RFC 1035, it contains crucial mappings between domain names, IP addresses, and other network resources through A, AAAA, CNAME, MX, and TXT records. These files are typically deployed on servers running BIND, or managed via platforms like cPanel, Microsoft 365, and Google Cloud DNS. Alternatively, a small subset of .zone files are proprietary game world data archives used by developers like Insomniac Games.
The primary disadvantage of the DNS .zone format is its extreme fragility. Because it relies on rigid, raw text syntax, a single missing trailing dot or invisible formatting error can trigger a total domain resolution failure. Furthermore, these text files are difficult for non-technical stakeholders to read and cannot be natively imported into spreadsheet software for auditing.
To safely audit DNS records, convert your .zone file to CSV or XLSX. For sharing network configurations with clients or management, convert to a highly readable PDF.
Convert.Guru analyzes your ZONE file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.
If you want to convert ZONE file to SYS, DLL, EXE, DRV, VXD, 386, COM, BAT, CMD, SCR, PIF or LNK, you can use BIND or similar software from the "DNS Zone Configuration" category. In the File menu, look for Save As… or Export….
To convert MSI, EXE, REG, MST, LNK, CAB, CAT, DRV, INF, SYS, MSU or DLL files to ZONE, try BIND or another comparable tool in the "DNS Zone Configuration" category.
The ZONE Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our ZONE converter.
