About CNF files

A .CNF file is most commonly a configuration file used by a variety of software, including databases like MySQL and MariaDB, security toolkits like OpenSSL, and network utilities like PuTTY. These files typically store plain text settings, initialization parameters, and server paths. However, the .CNF extension is notoriously overloaded. It is also used as a boot configuration file for Sony PlayStation 2 consoles (including Free MCBoot homebrew), a data format for Canberra Genie 2000 Gamma spectroscopy, and a Conjunctive Normal Form file for Boolean satisfiability solvers like MiniSat. In enterprise environments, Milestone Systems XProtect uses .CNF to store heavily compressed surveillance configuration backups.

Because developers use .CNF for entirely different internal structures - ranging from plain text and proprietary binaries to ZIP archives - file associations in Windows or macOS are practically useless. Double-clicking a .CNF file usually results in an OS error, or opens raw binary garbage in a default text editor. Furthermore, manually editing system-critical .CNF database files without proper syntax validation can easily crash your server.

To safely read, share, or archive these files, you often need to convert them. For web use and editing, convert plain text .CNF to TXT or MD to ensure universal compatibility without triggering system security alerts. For documentation, convert to PDF. If your file is a disguised backup archive, it must be extracted or converted to standard ZIP. Drop your file here to view and convert it securely right in your browser.

Convert.Guru analyzes your CNF file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.

Users also converted JPG, 41, TXT, PDF, PLT, CFG, CFM, XLB, FRM, FLP, CSV, PKL and PNG files.

The CNF Converter Story

The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our CNF converter.
