The .FLP file extension is most commonly an FL Studio Project file. It stores arrangements, track settings, plugin states, and MIDI sequence data created within the digital audio workstation. Crucially, a standard .FLP file does not contain actual audio samples; it only points to where those audio files are stored on your local drive. A secondary, but common, use for .FLP is a Promethean ActivInspire Flipchart, which teachers use to build interactive whiteboard lessons, or historically as a Virtual Floppy Disk Image used by virtualization tools.
The primary disadvantage of an .FLP file is its strict proprietary nature. You cannot open an FL Studio project without an active FL Studio license, and sending a standard .FLP file to a collaborator will result in "missing samples" errors unless you export it as a zipped loop package. Similarly, Promethean flipcharts require specific, often expensive, educational software to view. They are essentially useless to parents or students trying to review lesson materials at home.

For mastering and high-fidelity archiving, convert to WAV or FLAC.
