About CDL files
The .cdl file extension primarily acts as a proprietary vector graphics format developed for SignLab, a vinyl cutting and sign-making software suite by CADlink Technology. These files store vector paths, text, and layout instructions intended directly for CNC machines and vinyl plotters. Alternatively, the .cdl extension is heavily fragmented across unrelated industries. It frequently appears as a text-based Network Common Data Form (NetCDF) metadata language file created by Unidata, or as an ASC Color Decision List (XML format) used by professional color grading software like DaVinci Resolve.
The extreme fragmentation of the .cdl extension creates major identification problems. If you receive a binary SignLab .cdl file, you cannot view it in standard web browsers, and it requires an expensive commercial license for CADlink software to natively open or edit. It locks your vector assets into a closed ecosystem. If it is an ASC CDL, the raw XML structure is not natively understandable by basic image viewers.
To escape the proprietary CADlink ecosystem, convert SignLab .cdl files to SVG for web publishing, or EPS and DXF for universal editing in standard CAD or vector tools like Adobe Illustrator. For NetCDF data definitions, convert to JSON or CSV for seamless data analysis. If you need to archive a visual layout for a client, convert to .PDF/A.
Convert.Guru analyzes your CDL file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.
If you want to convert CDL file to PDF, AI, DXF, SCHEMATIC, DWG, DGN, RVT, RFA, SKP, 3DM, STEP or IGES, you can use CADlink SignLab or similar software from the "Vector Vinyl Cutting File" category. In the File menu, look for Save As… or Export….
To convert SLDASM, DGN, PRT, IAM, X_B, CATPRODUCT, SLDPRT, RVT, ASM, DWG, CATPART or DXF files to CDL, try CADlink SignLab or another comparable tool in the "Vector Vinyl Cutting File" category.
The CDL Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our CDL converter.
