About CDL files
CDL (Color Decision List) files are used to ensure consistent color grading, and are commonly used in the post-production of video and film. They are text-based files that contain color information, such as color values and color transforms, that can be used to accurately adjust the color of a video or film. CDL files are used to ensure that the same color grading is applied across multiple copies of the same video or film.
CDL files can be converted to other file types, such as OpenColorIO (.ocio), OpenEXR (.exr) and Adobe RGB (.acv). The software used to convert CDL files depends on the target file type. For example, Adobe After Effects can be used to convert CDL files to OpenColorIO, while OpenColorIO can be used to convert CDL files to OpenEXR. For Adobe RGB conversion, Adobe Photoshop can be used.
When converting CDL files, it is important to consider the source and target color spaces. CDL files are usually encoded in the ACES color space, so it is important to ensure that the target color space is compatible with ACES. Additionally, CDL files may contain color transforms that are not supported by the target color space, so it is important to ensure that any transforms are supported before converting the file.
CDL files can be challenging to convert, as they contain complex color information. Additionally, the software used to convert CDL files can be expensive and difficult to use. For these reasons, it is often easier to use a free and easy online website, such as Convert.Guru, to convert CDL files.
The CDL Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began more than 25 years ago in California, when Tom Simondi published the most comprehensive database of file formats on his website. Before that, Tom had worked on Space Shuttle development at the Air Force Systems Command’s Space Division in Los Angeles. He is known as one of the top programmers of the late 1980s.
When Microsoft integrated Tom’s Filext database into Windows XP, it became the leading platform for analyzing and processing file types and formats.
Today, we use the latest technologies to analyze, process, and convert one of the world's largest collections of file formats. We are committed to developing the best CDL converter by continuously improving quality, usability, and reliability.
