About BNP files
The .BNP extension represents two distinct file formats that often confuse users due to their proprietary nature. Most commonly, a .BNP file is a Video Data Index created by Sony camcorders and digital cameras (and some AVIN dashcams). These files act as a database, storing crucial metadata like recording dates, timestamps, and sequence information for the actual high-definition video files (typically MTS or M2TS). They are not video files themselves.
The primary frustration users encounter is attempting to play a .BNP file in media players like VLC or Windows Media Player, resulting in playback errors. Because they contain only binary index data, they cannot be converted directly into viewable video formats like MP4 or AVI. The solution is to locate the accompanying video file in the same directory. If you are archiving footage, keep the .BNP file with the video to preserve metadata for software like Sony PlayMemories Home.
Alternatively, in the gaming community, a .BNP file is a compressed mod package for The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, managed by the BCML (Breath of the Wild Cross-Platform Mod Loader). These are essentially renamed 7Z archives. Users often struggle to open them if they lack the mod loader. For manual access, you can rename the extension from .BNP to 7Z and extract the contents using 7-Zip or WinRAR.
Convert.Guru analyzes your BNP file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.

The BNP Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our BNP converter.
