About CPI files
The .cpi file extension primarily represents an AVCHD Clip Information file. These files are created by digital video cameras from manufacturers like Sony and Panasonic to store critical metadata about high-definition video clips. They contain details such as the frame rate, aspect ratio, timecode, and frame size of the corresponding mts or m2ts video file. A smaller percentage of .cpi files function as Keyboard Expansion Pack data files used by the Yamaha Expansion Manager to load new voices onto digital instruments.
Because an AVCHD .cpi file is strictly a metadata sidecar file, it does not contain any actual video or audio media. The major disadvantage of this format is the confusion it causes: users frequently attempt to play or convert it as a video, only to encounter errors. Furthermore, the format consists of compiled binary data that requires specialized video editing software like Adobe Premiere Pro or Apple Final Cut Pro to be interpreted correctly during the video import process.
Users often want to convert these files to MP4, which is impossible since there is no video to convert. If your goal is to extract the readable metadata, you can convert the .cpi file to a standard text format like TXT or document like PDF for archiving and review. If you need the video, you must locate the associated mts file instead.
Convert.Guru analyzes your CPI file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.

The CPI Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our CPI converter.
