About BDM files

A .bdm file typically serves one of two distinct purposes, both of which present significant compatibility challenges for standard users.

Most commonly (approx. 55%), it is a Blu-ray Movie Object or AVCHD Information File. These are not actual video files but lightweight metadata containers (often index.bdm or movieobj.bdm) found within the BDMV or AVCHD directory structure. They instruct hardware players on how to navigate menus, titles, and verify contents.

The Problem: Users often attempt to play a .bdm file directly, only to find that standard media players like Windows Media Player or QuickTime cannot open them. Because the file contains binary instructions rather than video streams, converting the .bdm file itself is technically impossible in the way one converts an MP4.

The Solution:

The second common variation (approx. 44%) is a Bill of Materials (BOM) index created by PTC Pro/ENGINEER (now known as PTC Creo). These files map assembly components in complex CAD projects. They are strictly proprietary and unreadable without the specific version of the CAD software that created them. For data portability, users should use the source software to export these lists to CSV, XLSX, or PDF.

Convert.Guru analyzes your BDM file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.

Users also converted BDMV, CPI, TDT, MPL, TID, MTS, ZIP, CED, XML, DBM, BMP, MXF and JPG files.

The BDM Converter Story

The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our BDM converter.
