About BMD files
The .BMD file format is primarily used to store 3D models, game messages, and proprietary binary data. The two most prominent use cases are Binary Model Data for the Webzen game MU Online, and 3D assets or message data for Nintendo GameCube and Wii titles built on the J3D engine. In rare cases, it also acts as an XML mind map file for Blumind.
These binary files present significant challenges because they are proprietary and heavily compiled. Disadvantages include a lack of official documentation, reliance on obscure community modding tools, and zero support from standard desktop software. You typically cannot open them without dedicated plugins for Blender or Autodesk 3ds Max, or specialized community software like Noesis or SuperBMD.
Gamers and modders frequently need to convert .BMD files to standard 3D formats like OBJ, FBX, or DAE to modify character models or environments. Doing so strips away game-specific engine code, leaving only the geometric mesh and texture mapping. Text-based message files are often converted to TXT or XML for localization editing.
Because .BMD is a closed, proprietary format, standard online converters almost always fail to process it. Only the original game engine or specific community-built parsers know how to read the exact byte structure.
Convert.Guru analyzes your BMD file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.
If you want to convert BMD file to SMD, OBJ, EXE, ISO, BIN, CUE, PAK, WAD, PK3, PK4, BSP or MAP, you can use Blender or similar software from the "Game 3D Model Data" category. In the File menu, look for Save As… or Export….
To convert MOD, BIN, CFG, SCX, DAT, MPQ, LOG, CUE, INI, EXE, SCM or ISO files to BMD, try Blender or another comparable tool in the "Game 3D Model Data" category.
The BMD Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our BMD converter.
