The .bmd file extension primarily refers to proprietary binary game data used in two distinct, high-profile contexts: Nintendo GameCube/Wii environments (J3D engine) and the MMORPG Webzen MU Online. In the Nintendo ecosystem, these files serve as either Binary Model Data (storing 3D geometry, textures, and rigging) or Binary Message Data (storing in-game dialogue and scripts). In MU Online, they function as encrypted storage for item definitions and 3D assets. Additionally, .bmd is occasionally used by Blumind for XML-based mind maps.
Working with .bmd files presents significant hurdles for modders and developers.
