Extract text from 3D CAD models (AMD)

The .amd file extension suffers from heavy fragmentation, but it is most commonly encountered as an ASCII scene export from Autodesk 3ds Max or a CAD/CAM manufacturing drawing generated by Hexagon Alphacam. In 3D modeling workflows, an .amd file stores mesh geometry, material properties, and basic scene coordinates in a human-readable plain text format. In CNC manufacturing, the Alphacam variant stores 2D and 3D routing and milling instructions. The extension is also famously used for 3D model assets in classic Capcom PlayStation Portable (PSP) games, which can be inspected using reverse-engineering tools like Noesis.
The biggest disadvantage of the .amd format is software lock-in and format collisions. Because over a dozen entirely different software packages use the exact same extension - ranging from ABBYY FineReader OCR language packs to BioWare Infinity Engine maps - operating systems constantly guess the wrong application when you double-click the file. Furthermore, 3ds Max ASCII exports are incredibly bloated compared to modern binary formats, and Alphacam files require an expensive, proprietary subscription to open. Web browsers have zero native support for viewing these files.
To make these files actually useful, you must convert them. For general 3D editing and web visualization, convert the 3ds Max .amd to universally supported OBJ or FBX. For manufacturing and CAD interoperability, convert Alphacam .amd files to standard DXF or STEP. If you are dealing with text-based data like OCR packs, convert to a basic TXT file.
