About AU files
AU files typically represent one of two distinct audio formats, creating frequent confusion for users. Most commonly, these are Audacity Audio Data Blocks. Unlike standard audio files, these are proprietary chunks - usually just six seconds long - generated by Audacity (versions prior to 3.0) to manage large recording projects. They reside in a _data folder and are practically useless individually, as they lack the sequencing information contained in the master AUP file. Attempting to play them individually results in disjointed, out-of-order sound snippets rather than a complete track.
The second common variation is the Sun/NeXT Audio format, a legacy standard introduced by Sun Microsystems. These are standalone audio files often containing μ-law, A-law, or linear PCM data, historically used on Unix systems and the early web. While functional, they suffer from poor compatibility with modern media players like Windows Media Player or mobile devices.
To resolve compatibility issues or recover usable audio:
- For Sun/NeXT Files: Convert them to MP3 or AAC for universal playback on smartphones and web browsers, or WAV for lossless archiving.
- For Audacity Blocks: If you have the original project, open the AUP file in Audacity and use "Export." If you only have the .au blocks (e.g., data recovery), you can convert them to WAV to attempt manual stitching.
- For VidMate Files: Occasionally, video downloads are saved as .au; try renaming to MP4 or converting to MKV.

The AU Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our AU converter.
