Convert a file to AUP
To convert other file formats to the "Legacy Project File" file type, you need software like Audacity or a similar tool.
About AUP files
An .aup file is a legacy project file created by versions of Audacity prior to 3.0. Unlike standard audio files like MP3 or WAV, an .AUP file is simply an XML-formatted text file that acts as a roadmap; it tells the software how to arrange audio chunks, volume levels, and effects. It does not contain actual audio data. Instead, it references a corresponding _data folder (e.g., project_data) that must reside in the same directory.
A major problem for users is attempting to play these files in media players like VLC or uploading them to streaming services, which results in errors because the file lacks audio content. Furthermore, moving an .aup file without its data folder corrupts the project, leading to "missing data block" errors.
To share or play your recording, you must convert the project. For universal playback and web use, convert the project to MP3. For high-fidelity archiving or professional editing, export to WAV or FLAC. If you intend to continue editing in modern versions of Audacity, you should convert the legacy .aup structure into the newer, self-contained aup3 format (based on SQLite) to prevent data loss.
Convert.Guru analyzes your AUP file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.
If you want to convert AUP file to MP3, WAV, MP4, AUP3, AAC, FLAC, OGG, WMA, M4A, AIFF, OPUS or ALAC, you can use Audacity or similar software from the "Audio Project Management" category. In the File menu, look for Save As… or Export….
To convert MIDI, AAC, TTA, AU, WV, DTS, MID, FLAC, RA, MP3, PCM or WAV files to AUP, try Audacity or another comparable tool in the "Audio Project Management" category.
The AUP Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our AUP converter.
