A .US file is a highly ambiguous file extension used for multiple disparate formats. Common uses include Upgrade Launcher resource files, DICOM Ultrasound medical images, Unreal Engine sound banks, and Spanish Cadastral subparcel data. Because the extension lacks standardization, opening these files requires knowing their origin - ranging from medical imaging viewers to proprietary game clients like those from Softnyx.
The primary disadvantage of the .US format is its extreme fragmentation. Users often encounter a .US file with zero context about its true internal structure. Some are proprietary game archives completely unreadable by standard software, requiring reverse engineering to access. Others are simply standard ZIP or JPG files renamed by developers to obfuscate assets and prevent casual user tampering. Standard online converters frequently fail to process .US files because they rely blindly on the file extension rather than analyzing the actual file signature (magic number).
Recommended conversion targets depend entirely on the underlying data. A medical DICOM .US file should be converted to JPG, PNG, or PDF for standard viewing. A disguised ZIP must be extracted.
