About SND files

A .SND file is a generic extension used for a wide variety of audio formats and game sound archives. Historically, it originated as the native audio format for NeXT and Sun Microsystems workstations (often interchangeable with AU). Today, the extension is heavily utilized by game engines like M.U.G.E.N, BioWare Aurora, Bully, and Valve Source to store collections of sound effects. Classic Akai hardware samplers also use .SND files, and occasionally, older WhatsApp voice notes used the extension to disguise Ogg-encoded audio.

Because the format is highly fragmented, opening a .SND file depends entirely on its source. Standard audio players like VLC Media Player or editors like Audacity can open NeXT/Sun and standard RIFF-based variations. However, proprietary game-specific archives require specialized modding tools, such as Fighter Factory for M.U.G.E.N files.

The biggest disadvantage of .SND files is their extreme ambiguity. The extension tells you nothing about the actual encoding or container. It might be a single uncompressed audio track, a compressed OGG file, or a proprietary archive containing hundreds of packed sound effects. This fragmentation means native OS players like Windows Media Player or Apple Music usually fail to recognize them. Trying to share a .SND file online or play it on a smartphone is virtually impossible without specialized apps.

To make these files usable, you must convert them into a standardized format. For general playback, web sharing, and mobile use, convert to MP3 or AAC. If you need to edit the audio or preserve it for archiving without losing quality, convert to WAV or FLAC. Just drag and drop your file here to analyze and convert it - free, online, and without installing software.
