About AVS files

The .AVS filename extension represents two distinct but technical file types that often confuse users.

  1. AviSynth Script: Most commonly, this is a plain text file containing code for AviSynth, a powerful frameserver used by video editors. It is not a video file itself but a set of instructions telling the computer how to process video on the fly. You cannot upload an .AVS script to YouTube or play it on a phone; it must be "rendered" or converted into a standard format like MP4.
  2. Security DVR / AVS Video: It may also be a high-compression video file from security cameras (associated with Digital Watchdog systems) or a broadcast stream using the Audio Video Standard (a Chinese competitor to H.264). These files are often proprietary and fail to open in standard players like Windows Media Player or QuickTime due to missing codecs.

The AVS Converter Story

The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our AVS converter.
