About ANIM files
The .anim extension predominantly serves as a Unity Animation Clip, a critical asset type within the Unity game engine. These files store keyframe data - essentially mathematical instructions on how a GameObject's position, rotation, and scale change over time - rather than actual video frames. Because they contain raw coordinate and timing data (often serialized as YAML text) rather than pixels, .anim files cannot be opened by standard media players like VLC or Windows Media Player. This proprietary nature creates a significant barrier for users who simply want to preview an animation found in a game's data folder or share a clip without launching the heavy Unity Editor.
A secondary but important use of the format is the Maya Animation File by Autodesk Maya. In this context, the file transfers animation curves between different character rigs or scenes. Practical constraints arise when trying to move this data between different software ecosystems (e.g., from Maya to Blender); direct compatibility is often limited, leading to broken rigs or missing motion data.
For 3D artists and developers, the best conversion target is FBX or GLTF, which encapsulate the animation data in a universally accepted 3D wrapper. For users looking to archive or preview the content, converting the rendered output to MP4 (H.264) or WebM is ideal for web compatibility.
Convert.Guru analyzes your ANIM file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.
Users also converted UEANIM, ANIMATN, VMD, META, ANIME, FBX, UNITYPACKAGE, ANM, MESH, ASSET, ZIP, UNITY3D and MP4 files.
The ANIM Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our ANIM converter.
