About ANM files
The .ANM file is primarily a 3D animation data container used by numerous game engines and software platforms. These files typically store skeletal animation, motion capture sequences, or UI animations for games like League of Legends, S.T.A.L.K.E.R., and engines like CryEngine or Ansys Fluent. Because .ANM is a generic extension adopted by dozens of unrelated developers, the internal format varies wildly. It is highly proprietary. A file from Dawn of War cannot be read by the tools used for Dofus. This fragmentation is a major disadvantage. Without the specific game's engine or custom community-made import scripts for software like Autodesk 3ds Max or Blender, the data is completely locked. You cannot simply open an .ANM file by double-clicking it. To make these animations usable in modern workflows, you must convert them. For 3D editing and cross-engine compatibility, convert to FBX or GLTF. If the file contains 2D frames (like older DeluxePaint animations), convert to GIF or MP4 for web viewing.
