About AN8 files
The .an8 file extension is the native project format for Anim8or, a freeware 3D modeling and character animation program developed by Steven Glanville. These files store complete 3D scenes, including mesh geometry, materials, textures, rigging (bones), and animation timelines in a structured, text-based format.
While .an8 files are excellent for saving your work within the Anim8or ecosystem, they pose significant interoperability challenges. The format is proprietary and effectively "locked" to Anim8or; it is not natively supported by industry-standard tools like Blender, Unity, or Unreal Engine. Users commonly encounter problems when trying to 3D print a model or migrate assets to a modern game engine, as these platforms cannot read the raw .an8 data. To use an Anim8or model elsewhere, you must convert it - typically to OBJ (for static meshes), STL (for 3D printing), or FBX (to retain some animation data). Rare instances of this extension may also refer to legacy DNA analysis files from Vector NTI.
Convert.Guru analyzes your AN8 file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.
If you want to convert AN8 file to OBJ, FBX, DAE, 3DS, MAX, BLEND, MA, MB, C4D, STL, PLY or WRL, you can use Anim8or or similar software from the "3D Modeling Project" category. In the File menu, look for Save As… or Export….
To convert DWG, DAE, X3D, IGES, WRL, JT, SKP, 3DS, 3DM, OBJ, STEP or FBX files to AN8, try Anim8or or another comparable tool in the "3D Modeling Project" category.
The AN8 Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our AN8 converter.
