The .XAF file extension is highly fragmented and serves two entirely different primary purposes. Most commonly, it is an XML Financial Audit File based on the Dutch Auditfile Standard. These files are generated by accounting platforms like Exact Online to exchange financial data with the Dutch Tax and Customs Administration. Alternatively, .XAF files function as XML Animation Files used in 3D modeling environments like Autodesk 3ds Max or the open-source Cal3D library to store skeletal animation data.
The main disadvantage of the .XAF format is its lack of universal standardization. Financial .XAF files are essentially massive XML databases. They frequently exceed 100MB, which will instantly freeze standard text editors like Notepad. Furthermore, they use a proprietary schema that only specialized, expensive accounting software can parse correctly. 3D animation .XAF files suffer from similar ecosystem lock-in; they are useless without their accompanying mesh and skeleton files.
When converting financial .XAF files, the best target formats are CSV or XLSX so the data can be manipulated in standard spreadsheet software. For 3D animation files, converting to FBX or DAE ensures broader compatibility across modern game engines.
Because an .XAF file could be an accounting ledger, a 3D skeleton, or even a Sega arcade game audio archive, standard online converters universally fail to process them.
