About AMI files

The .AMI file format is heavily fragmented. Most commonly, it functions as either a Molecular Imaging Data file used by spectral imaging scanners, or as a 3D CAD Model Package and annotation file for legacy engineering software like PTC CoCreate and AutoCAD Mechanical.

Because of this split identity, managing .AMI files is a frustrating experience. Scientific .AMI files are locked behind highly proprietary and expensive lab software like Aura. Meanwhile, CAD-based .AMI files are often just disguised GZIP containers that trap your 3D models in an obsolete ecosystem. Neither format is natively supported by web browsers, standard operating systems, or basic viewing tools. Relying on the original format makes archiving and client sharing almost impossible.

To break free from these restrictions, you must convert the file. For 3D engineering models, convert .AMI to STEP or IGES to ensure cross-platform compatibility with modern CAD systems. For scientific imaging reports and 2D annotations, convert to PDF for universal document sharing, or TIFF for high-quality archival storage. The AMI Converter Story

The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our AMI converter.
