Convert a file to OVA

To convert other file formats to the "Virtual Appliance Package" file type, you need software like VirtualBox or a similar tool.

About OVA files

An .OVA (Open Virtual Appliance) file is a single-file distribution package for a virtual machine. It is essentially a standard TAR archive containing an OVF (Open Virtualization Format) descriptor, a manifest file, and virtual disk files (typically VMDK). Developed by the DMTF, this format standardizes VM distribution across hypervisors like VMware and Oracle VM VirtualBox. For a deeper technical overview, see Open Virtualization Format on Wikipedia.

Despite acting as a universal standard, .OVA files introduce significant real-world friction. They are notoriously massive - often scaling into dozens or hundreds of gigabytes - making them slow to transfer and difficult to inspect. Because the file is an opaque archive, you cannot edit the virtual hardware settings or access the underlying file system without extracting the entire package first. Furthermore, importing an .OVA into competing environments like Microsoft Hyper-V often fails outright due to hardware profile incompatibilities and a lack of native support for the packaged VMDK disks.

To bypass these limitations, you must extract or convert the archive. Convert or unpack the .OVA to an OVF to edit the XML-based hardware configurations directly. For cross-hypervisor migrations (such as moving to Hyper-V), extract the package and convert the raw virtual disk to VHD or VHDX. Drop your file here to analyze and convert its contents securely right in your browser - free, online, and without installing heavy virtualization software.

Convert.Guru analyzes your OVA file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.

Users also converted OVF, VMDK, OVO, OV, QCOW2, VDI, ZIP, X86, ISO, PDF, VBOX, CRDOWNLOAD and X64 files.

FAQ

If you want to convert OVA file to QCOW2, VHD, ISO, OVF, VMDK, VHDX, AMI, PDF, CSV, JSON, XML or YAML, you can use VirtualBox or similar software from the "Virtual Machine Appliance Distribution" category. In the File menu, look for Save As… or Export….

To convert DBF, XML, SQLITE, XLSX, SQL, TSV, ACCDB, YAML, MDB, CSV, ODS or JSON files to OVA, try VirtualBox or another comparable tool in the "Virtual Machine Appliance Distribution" category.

The OVA Converter Story

The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our OVA converter.
