Despite acting as a universal standard, .OVA files introduce significant real-world friction. Because the file is an opaque archive, you cannot edit the virtual hardware settings or access the underlying file system without extracting the entire package first. Furthermore, importing an .OVA into competing environments like Microsoft Hyper-V often fails outright due to hardware profile incompatibilities and a lack of native support for the packaged VMDK disks.
