About OVA files

An .OVA file represents an Open Virtual Appliance, a standard format used to package and distribute virtual machines. Technically, it is a TAR archive containing an OVF descriptor file (XML-based configuration), disk images (typically VMDK), and optional manifest files. This single-file format is ideal for downloading and sharing complete VM setups across platforms like VirtualBox and VMware vSphere.

However, the monolithic nature of .OVA files presents challenges. They are often gigabytes in size, making them difficult to transfer or inspect without specialized virtualization software. Users frequently encounter compatibility errors when importing an OVA created in one hypervisor (e.g., VMware Workstation) into another (e.g., VirtualBox) due to hardware definition discrepancies. Furthermore, proprietary environments like Microsoft Hyper-V do not natively support OVA imports, requiring conversion.

To overcome these hurdles, users should convert or extract the .OVA file. Extracting it reveals the OVF and VMDK files, allowing for manual configuration edits. For migration to Hyper-V, the internal disk must be converted to VHD or VHDX. For use with QEMU or Proxmox, converting the payload to QCOW2 is the standard workflow.

Convert.Guru analyzes your OVA file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.

Users also converted OVF, VMDK, OVO, OV, QCOW2, VDI, ZIP, X86, ISO, PDF, VBOX, CRDOWNLOAD and X64 files.

The OVA Converter Story

The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our OVA converter.
